Recycle, reuse, recreate, reinvent, and redo all that you can to help save our planet and save yourself money in the long run. There are a many things that you can do to save your self money and electricity. Here's just a few.
Look for the energy star label on light bulbs. The package should have the energy star. The new florescent bulbs can give you twice the life of a regular bulb and use a fourth of the energy. That spells dollars. Lots of dollars. One five pack of energy smart bulbs (950 lumens, light compareable to a 60 watt bulb) can save you $270 dollars in electricity and each bulb is supposed to last eight years. The down side to these lights is that they may cause iterferance with radios, televisions, wireless telephones, and remote controls. If this occurs, move the lamp away from the device or plug either into a different outlet or move the device. For your safety always install touching the plastic part of the bulb. If you drop a bulb, clean up carefully as they contain mercury.
Unplug small appliances, plug in strips, and other lights when you don't use them often. A little used guest room would be a good example. If something is plugged into an outlet, but not turned on, it still uses a small amount of electricty.
Use LED lights under your counters or above the cabinets. These use very little electrity and last years. Buy LED for your Christmas tree and other yearly decorations.
Some states are considering banning regular incondescent bulbs. California is one of the first. Save yourself time and money and buy energy start light bulbs.
